Bahrain to Create Hydrogen Economy

Bahrain's National Oil and Gas Authority (Noga) announced on social media on November 26 that its investment arm Nogaholding had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with US firm Air Products on developing a hydrogen economy in the gulf state.

The pair will assess the viability of deploying hydrogen as a fuel in the transport sector and as a means of reducing CO2 emissions.

"The studies outlined in the MoU encompass different areas from analysing the potential of hydrogen resources and evaluating other oil recovery possibilities to devising plans of deploying permanent hydrogen refuelling stations with an ultimate goal of achieving hydrogen economy," Bahrain LNG chairman Mazen Matar, who represented Nogaholding in signing the agreement, said in a statement.

Bahrain LNG operates a regasification terminal in Bahrain which was completed early this year but is yet to start receiving commercial LNG cargoes.

Air Products' president of Middle East, Egypt and Turkey, Imtiaz Mahtab, added that his company looked forward "to collaborating with Nogaholding to explore potential development opportunities supporting energy transition within the kingdom of Bahrain."
