Azerbaijan Re-Extracts 650 Million Cubic Metres of Gas From Underground Storages

By December 2015, natural gas resources in Azerbaijan’s underground gas storages totaled 2.7 billion cubic metres (bcm).

According to the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic's (SOCAR) statistics, during the gas pumping season in 2015, which had lasted from April 15 till November 15, some 1.8 bcm of gas has been pumped into the underground gas storages.

“920 mcm [million cubic metres] of gas has been pumped into the Garadag underground gas storage and 887 mcm into the Galmaz gas storage. Considering gas volume remained in the storage since 2014, active gas volume in the underground gas storages totals 2.7 bcm,” said a source from SOCAR.

SOCAR reported that gas pumping out of the underground gas storages started in November 2015. “Until now, 646 mcm of gas has been pumped out from the gas storages, of which 261 mcm out of the Garadag storage and 385 mcm out of the Galmaz storage," the source said

Because of this strong storage, it appears that until the end of the winter season the population of the country will be supplied with gas.

Azerbaijan has two underground gas storages facilities–Galmaz and Garadag. Galmaz is located 75 kilometres southeast of Baku and was put into operation in 1955. Garadag gas storage is located 25 kilometres southeast of Baku and it was launched in 1954.
