Australia's Woodside Seeks Permission to Export Canadian LNG

Australia’s Woodside Petroleum is seeking permission to export Canadian LNG, reports Financial Post.

Woodside Energy Holdings has applied to Canada’s National Energy Board to export 20 million tonnes of the fuel per year for 25 years from a proposed terminal at Grassy Point, B.C.

In January this year, Woodside and British Columbia signed an agreement which provides the company with exclusive right to negotiate a long-term tenure for an LNG facility at the south site of Grassy Point.

According to Financial Post, Woodside said it is considering both a land-based plant as well as a series of near-shore floating facilities.

Quoting from an application filed with the regulator late Friday, the newspaper said that project’s first phase would churn out 15 million tonnes of LNG per year, with a second phase adding five million tonnes over time. First gas is expected to shipped by 2012.

“A new pipeline will be required to transport sourced gas to the Grassy Point LNG facility,” the company said in its application without providing specifics. “A variety of possible pipeline routes are being examined.”

Woodside said it would consider tolling agreements with gas producers who wish to book capacity on the export facility, as well as potential acquisitions as an entry point in Western Canada’s gas industry, Financial Post adds.
