Australian Queensland Well Beats Hopes

The Mira pilot gas well in Queensland, Australia, which LNG operators Australia Pacific LNG and Santos have interests in, has shown a strong production trend, equity partner Comet Ridge said January 15.

The Mira 6/2 horizontal-vertical well combination, which was brought online by APLNG on December 10, saw gas flow pass 200,000ft³/d, Comet Ridge said.

“This combination and three vertical wells (Mira 3, 4 & 5) have been on-line over the past month and are actively dewatering the Mira Pilot Scheme,” it said. Mira is part of the Mahalo Joint Venture project located in the Denison Trough area of Queensland’s Bowen Basin.

Comet Ridge CEO Tor McCaul said he was very pleased with the progress. He noted that the gas rate increase in Mira 6/2 has been much more rapid than for the horizontal well at the Mahalo pilot.

The project is close to infrastructure with pipeline connections to the domestic market as well as the seaborne LNG market via the export terminals at the Port of Gladstone. Comet Ridge holds a 40% equity stake in the project with APLNG and Santos each holding 30%.
