Air Products opens South Korean hydrogen filling station

Air Products has opened a new hydrogen fuelling station at its industrial gases facility in Ulsan City in South Korea, the US company said on April 7.

Equipped with Air Products' hydrogen fuelling technology, is the first hydrogen filling station to be built and operated in the private sector in the city under a subsidy programme introduced by the government. Ulsan is one of three cities in South Korea piloting hydrogen development, and is the country's biggest centre for hydrogen production and distribution. It was the first city to operate hydrogen buses and taxi, manufactures hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and has been designated a free trade zone for hydrogen mobility development.

“Hydrogen and fuel cell technologies are part of the solution to the energy and environmental challenges of today and tomorrow,” Air Products' president for Korea, Kim Kyo-Yung, said. "As the world’s largest hydrogen producer and a global leader in hydrogen technology, Air Products is committed to supporting South Korea to realise a hydrogen-powered society through our expertise across every aspect of the hydrogen for mobility value chain."

South Korea wants hydrogen to cover 5% of its gross energy consumption by 2040, replacing other fuels in mobility and power and heating. It is looking to produce 6.2mn fuel cell vehicles and have at least 1,200 hydrogen filling stations in operation by 2040.

Air Products has taken part in developing over 250 hydrogen fuelling projects in more than 20 countries. It is involved in a $5bn green hydrogen and ammonia production project in Saudi Arabia and earlier this week agreed to cooperate with South Korea's Hyundai Oilbank on hydrogen energy use.
