Afro Energy to Resume Exploration at SA CBM Project

Afro Energy, a joint venture between Sydney-listed Kinetiko Energy and South African Badimo Gas, will resume exploration at Amersfoort coalbed methane (CBM) project in South Africa, Kinetiko said on May 27 in a statement.

“The exploration programme will include a high resolution aeromagnetic survey, designed to follow up the success of a similar survey completed in June 2014, which revealed unprecedented levels of geological detail including the extent of the dolerite sills that form the seals over the gas prone sandstones above the already gassy coal measures in this part of the main Karoo Basin,” Kinetiko said.

The survey is planned to fly 11,563 line km over the largest portion of the Amersfoort project. Technical information derived from the survey also has the potential to enable a revision of the current certified contingent resource of 1.5 trillion ft3, as was the case following the 2014 successful completion of the first high resolution aeromagnetic survey, the company said.

Kinetiko has a 49% equity in two onshore gas licences in the Amersfoort area. Under a farm out agreement with Badimo, Kinetiko is the project operator. The Amersfoort project tenure consists of over 1,600 km2 of granted exploration rights. According to Kinetiko, the Amersfoort area of the Eastern Transvaal coal field between Johannesburg and Durban is one of the most prospective areas for CBM.
