ABB secure automation contract for Rio Grande LNG project

Global technology company ABB has been awarded an order by Bechtel Energy to deliver integrated automation, electrical and digital solutions for the first phase of NextDecade Corporation’s Rio Grande LNG facility in Brownsville, Texas, it said on November 29.

Bechtel is undertaking construction of the first phase of the project under an engineering, procurement, and construction contract. This phase includes three liquefaction trains.

This order, booked in Q3 2023, marks ABB’s first fully integrated scope on a major LNG facility, the company said. When fully operational, phase one of the facility is expected to produce 17.6mn tonnes/year of LNG.

NextDecade sanctioned the $18.4bn first phase in July, completing what it said was the largest greenfield energy project financing in US history.
