GE to supply turbines to Vietnam's 1st CCGT

GE on May 16 said it will supply two 9HA.02 gas turbines to PetroVietnam Power’s (PV Power) Nhon Trach 3 & 4 power plant. The order has been placed by Korea’s Samsung C&T Corp., the leader of the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) consortium.

The Nhon Trach 3 & 4 will be the first to be powered by regasified LNG. Once in operation in 2025, Nhon Trach 3 & 4 power plant will deliver 1.6 GW of electricity to the grid. The power plant will supply electricity to three large industrial areas in the southern region of the country including Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, and Ba Ria–Vung Tau provinces.

Vietnam is currently heavily reliant on coal which fuels around a third of its electricity output. The growth of gas-fired power generation will support both coal-to-gas transition and accelerate renewables penetration by enhancing the reliability and stability of the energy grid, GE said.

For the Nhon Trach expansion, GE will provide two blocks of more than 800 MW each including a GE 9HA.02 gas turbine, an STF-D650 steam turbine, a W88 generator, a once-through heat recovery steam generator and its integrated Mark VIe distributed control system.

The new units join the existing Nhon Trach 1 and Nhon Trach 2 power plants, which together have 1.2 GW of generation capacity. GE said the company and PV Power May 11 signed a memorandum of understanding to develop solutions to improve the efficiency of the existing Nhon Trach 1 power plant and develop long-term cooperation on the maintenance for Nhon Trach 3 & 4.
