Cedar LNG EA submitted to provincial, federal ministries

BC’s Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) said November 16 it had completed the application review phase for the proposed Cedar LNG project near Kitimat and had referred the application for an environmental assessment (EA) certificate to provincial and federal ministries.

Under terms of a substitution process by which the BC EAO reviews the project on behalf of both the provincial and federal governments, BC’s ministries of environment and climate change strategy and energy, mines and low carbon innovation have 45 days to either approve the EA, deny an EA certificate or require additional assessment.

Along with its submission to provincial ministries, the EAO’s assessment has also been referred to the federal minister of environment and climate change for a federal decision. As part of the substitution process, the EAO conducted the assessment on behalf of the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada.

Cedar LNG is a joint venture of Haisla Nation, on whose traditional territory the 3mn mt/yr floating LNG project will be located, and Calgary’s Pembina Pipeline. At an estimated capital cost of C$2.4bn (US$1.8bn), it is one of the largest First Nation-owned infrastructure projects in Canada.
