Israel Starts Exporting Gas to Egypt

Egypt has started importing natural gas from Israel, the Egyptian petroleum ministry said in a statement published on its website on January 15.  

“This is an important development that will serve the economic interests of both countries. This development will enable Israel to export some of its natural gas to Europe via Egyptian LNG facilities, and will come in the context of Egypt's growing role as a regional gas hub,” the ministry said.

The gas from Israel’s Leviathan and Tamar offshore fields, operated by a US-Israel consortium, is being supplied via a subsea pipeline connecting Israel and Egypt’s Sinai peninsula. Egypt plans to use the gas for domestic consumption and for liquefaction for export to other markets.
