Africa Oil applies to drill off South Africa

Canada's Africa Oil Corp. and its partners have applied for environmental authorisation to drill at block 3B/4B in the Orange basin off the coast of South Africa, one of the partners, London-listed Eco Oil & Gas, reported on March 21.

The group are seeking a permit to drill one well and one contingent well, and potentially up to five wells in total, within an area in the north of the block. Environmental Impact Management Services has been contracted to apply for the permit and undertake the necessary environmental impact assessment.

African Oil operates 3B/4B with a 20% interest, while Eco has 26.3% and Ricocure controls the remaining 53.8% interest.

There is heightened interest in exploration off South Africa following TotalEnergies' Brulpadda and Luiperd gas discoveries made there in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

Eco co-founder Colin Kinley said 3B/4B represented "an outstanding resource exploration and development opportunity for the joint venture partnership and South Africa."
