PetroChina’s Changning-Weiyuan Block Smashes Target

PetroChina’s Changning-Weiyuan block in China’s Sichuan province produced 2.3bn m³ of shale gas last year, parent company CNPC said January 3. The output is much higher than the 2016 target of 1.5bn m³. The company’s total shale gas output last year was 2.5bn m³, the extra 0.2bn m³ coming from the Zhaotong production zone.

Changning-Weiyuan was designated a national demonstration zone in March 2012 by the planning agency National Development and Reform Commission. The demonstration zone was completed In January this year. 

In the past few years China has been working hard to exploit its vast shale gas reserves. According to experts, China has achieved significant improvements in shale gas exploration technology. CNPC and Sinopec are the two state owned firm dominant in the sector.
